I want to share the story of one of our families that lays bare the harsh reality of life’s fragility in Kariobangi.
In 2017, their daughter was diagnosed with a severe heart condition, necessitating constant medical care and forcing the closure of the family’s small store, their sole source of income and hope.
The family faced financial ruin due to the closure of their store and escalating medical costs. They were only able to afford the open-heart surgery their daughter needed with the support of family, friends, their church, and a charitable organization. Unfortunately, their daughter developed complications after the surgery and passed away.
In the wake of this tragedy, they were engulfed by deep grief. Yet, in their grief, they resolved not to be defined by despair. They clung to each other and embarked on a journey to rebuild their lives. At that time, enrolling one of their younger daughters in Hands of Love gave us the opportunity to share in their journey of healing, witnessing the slow, yet beautiful process of recovery. The progress they have made is truly remarkable, and I am inspired by their courage.
This family’s story, though heart-wrenching, is echoed in the lives of many in Kariobangi where every day is a testament to resilience. Here, one unexpected illness, one tragic accident, can unravel the fragile threads of life, reminding us all of the delicate balance between hope and heartbreak.
