Many times I am asked, “Is your work in Kariobangi making any difference?” Or a similar question, “How do you know you have made an impact on a child?”
In our work, it may appear that we are not making any difference, as poverty is still widespread and many children still lack access to early childhood education. However, we undoubtedly change the trajectory of the lives of our children. When we love children by providing care, stability, love, and education, we make investments in their journey. The story of Emma Nyambura illustrates this.
Mid-2019, we made an appeal for Emma Nyambura, one of our students who had rickets that caused severe bowing, leaving her with chronic pain in the spine, pelvis, and legs, making it difficult for her to learn.
Following the intervention, Emma was successfully treated at Kijabe Mission Hospital, and after five months of convalescing, she fully recovered and returned to school to continue her learning.
In November 2023, Emma completed grade 2 and was among the top performers at a fashion show during our graduation ceremony, where she advocated for recycling and sustainable use of resources with special attire made from upcycled milk packets.
Emma’s confidence and determination as she gracefully walked down the runway, symbolized her triumph over adversity. Her story serves as an inspiration to others, proving that with proper care and support, anyone can overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams. What a powerful reminder of the difference Hands of Love is making.
